Control your environment

Updated: Oct 14, 2025

It has already been established that there are many things we can’t control. Life is unpredictable, one day you think you’re on top of the world, the next day you may hit rock bottom. Working towards managing our thoughts should be part of our daily routine as we attempt to control the only thing we can, our attitude. As you reflect on that notion, you’ll soon come to the realization, as did I, that there are steps you can take to control your environment.

Cravings are real. I have a hard time resisting temptations when it comes to some foods. We can all agree that your food intake is the most important factor in successful weight management. Start at home. Take stock of the food in your refrigerator, kitchen and wherever else you keep it (hide it). Then get rid of all foods that are processed and loaded with sugar. Needless to say, this also includes beverages. Since I have a sweet tooth, I avoid having any chocolate, candy or ice cream at my house. I also find myself being tempted at work. It is difficult to stay disciplined due to not only the availability of junk food but since it is often free.

Just like eliminating all the foods that will hinder your progress, you may also have to cut some people out of your life. This may be extremely difficult as often times the people that are closest to you are the ones you may have to get rid of. Surround yourself with individuals who have similar goals and aspirations as you do. Better yet, surround yourself with people who are crushing it! If your entourage is creating a toxic environment then how will you succeed in the long run? This journey is hard and difficult. More so, it is long. Having that support system will help you push yourself when you are focused and they will carry you when you lack motivation.

There is one more thing you can control, and that is time. Now many of you might disagree with that statement. We can’t stop time. Nor can we go back in time. However, you can prioritize your time. Whether you realize it or not, your daily tasks are a reflection of your priorities. Too many people make excuses instead of making a way. Make the time to go for a run, hit the gym, ride your bike or whatever activity it may be. This might involve waking up earlier than usual, perhaps decreasing your TV time and/or minimizing your phone conversations. Just make it a priority and you’ll be surprised on how your schedule opens up!

This entry is dedicated to my lovely wife @rah_ducs who constantly strives for self-improvement.
