My First Love

Updated: Oct 14, 2025

From the first time I laid eyes on you my heart melted. Never have I felt this way before. Butterflies filled my stomach and a rush of pure bliss consumed me. All I knew is that I wanted to hold onto this feeling forever. The way you looked was so appealing. Your fragrance was so intoxicating. Beyond all of that, it was the way you tasted that left me wanting more. That insatiable yearning would never fade away.

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. In my case it is true as no other has captivated my heart more than food. Food amplifies my moments of joy, provides support in sorrows and delivers comfort when it’s most needed. Food has always been there – continually dependable and reliable to satisfy my every craving.

So many occasions are etched in my memory where great meals were involved. As a child I would wake up early, pour myself a bowl of cereal drowned in milk as I watched my morning cartoons. Birthday parties where made even more special since my favorite dish: fried fish with homemade French fries, was often prepared followed by a moist chocolate frosted layered marble cake for desert. Thanksgiving dinners where memorable with a big fat turkey being the center piece of an elaborate spread.  Then there were many unforgettable late night Christmas réveillons where pâtés, tortières and crémas were among many traditional staples of the holiday meal.

Although my eating habits have changed throughout the years, my love for food has never wavered. Some of these changes have been healthier ones. I have replaced my cereal with oatmeal and berries, which is my go to breakfast along with eating eggs and bacon. I’ve also substituted cauliflower rice for regular rice. Now I consider rice and beans a treat to be had on special occasions and family gatherings. Food will always be the way to my heart. The only difference now is my brain has more of a say than my stomach.
